When the Spanish & English colonized the Caribbean islands of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Trinidad, & Jamaica, West Africans worked plantations of tobacco, sugar, & Coffee. Skinned hand drums, wooden sticks, bells & voice, fused with European melody instruments; horns, strings and keys, to form “Musica Tropical”, the broad name given to the danceable music from the Caribbean islands and the Central & South American mainland.
